Politics professor’s book touted by The Daily Beast

August 16, 2012 by Linfield News Team

Professor Nicholas Buccola’s new book about the political thought of Frederick Douglass was referenced by Andrew Sullivan in his widely-read Daily Dish column.

More than 150 years before Occupy protestors, the most influential African-American leader of the 19th century decried the gross inequalities in our society and argued that the government should take aggressive action to level the playing field. Now some libertarians have claimed the Douglass as one of their own.

Professor Buccola, who wrote The Political Thought of Frederick Douglass: In Pursuit of American Liberty, says Douglass provides a framework for our thinking about contemporary issues of fairness and social responsibility.

Buccola teaches in the Politic Science Department at Linfield College.
