President Miles K. Davis announces creation of scholarship for Jamaican students

February 10, 2023 by Kelly Williams Brown

By Kelly Williams Brown

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Linfield University President Miles K. Davis announced in a speech Thursday that starting with the 2023-24 academic year, the university will offer up to five “last dollar” scholarships to students from Jamaica. The scholarships can be for as much as full tuition and fees and will be offered with an emphasis on students interested in the creative arts.

He made the announcement during his keynote address to the Creative Career Expo, an annual event from the Jamaican Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport. The event draws hundreds of students interested in studying creative fields to the Jamaica Conference Centre in the capital city of Kingston.

Davis was one of two featured international speakers this year, along with American Ballet Theater chief executive Janet Rollé. The Hon. Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, minister of culture, gender, entertainment and sport, hosted the event.

The scholarships are considered “last dollar,” which means they are intended to cover full tuition after other aid is taken into consideration. Qualifying students must meet Linfield’s admission criteria, be accepted to the university and live on campus. The scholarship is automatically renewable for four years.

In his speech, Davis urged students to grow both artistically and entrepreneurially, noting that planning is key to career longevity.

“The creative industry is both a business and an art form, and successful entertainers master both,” Davis said. “It’s not about getting 15 minutes of fame on social media, but about developing a sustainable career.”
