The Linfield College Concert Band will perform its annual spring concert “Of Heart and Home” on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield.
Under the direction of Joan Haaland Paddock, professor of music and director of instrumental activities, the concert band will perform a variety of music including “Wizard of Oz” and pieces by Grainger, Shostakovich and Camphouse, among others. The band will be joined by senior vocal soloists Kayla Wilkens and Chelsea Janzen and will be accompanied by the Wildcat Men’s Glee Club, directed by Anna Song, assistant professor of music and choral director. Anton Belov, assistant professor of music, will perform as a special guest with the Men’s Glee Club. Student conductors will take the stage including senior Kaia Machalek, clarinet; and juniors Jenny Morgan, clarinet, and Reveca Primachenko, voice.
Recognition will be given to graduating seniors Wilkens, voice; Janzen, voice; Machalek, clarinet; Sarah Wilder, flute; Alison Bouchard, clarinet; Amanda Summers, oboe; and Alex Fitch, percussion.
The concert band is an instrumental ensemble made up of approximately 40 students and community members who play woodwind, brass, percussion and string bass instruments. Student performers are both music majors and non-majors who wish to keep music in their lives.
Paddock is the first woman to receive a doctorate in trumpet performance from Indiana University, where she studied trumpet with Charles Gorham and conducting with Fred Ebbs and Ray Cramer. Paddock received the Emmy Award from the National Academy of Arts and Sciences and the prestigious Performer’s Certificate. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to Norway, and studied at the Norwegian State Academy of Music. Paddock has performed throughout the Americas, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. She is a trumpeter with Halcyon Trio Oregon and holds memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National Conference, Oregon Band Directors Association, Oregon Music Educators Association, International Association of Jazz Educators and the International Trumpet Guild. She is currently a Fulbright Senior Specialist candidate for the Council of International Exchange Scholars.
