Linfield students have returned for the fall 2024 semester, with classes beginning Monday, Aug. 26. Two days later, the Linfield Gallery will open its first show of the year. It will be the first of dozens of arts, culture, athletic and social Linfield University events open to the public throughout the year.
Most events are free, and all are welcome to join! Unless otherwise noted, all events take place on the McMinnville campus, 900 SE Baker St. in McMinnville. August:
Thursday, Aug. 29: “Spheres of Influence” opening reception
Linfield Gallery presents “Spheres of Influence,” a multigenerational exhibition by members of the Hoskisson family featuring traditional ceramic vessels, sculpture, painting and drawing. Three generations of the family — parents Don and Cindy, daughter Mya and their grandchildren — are part of the show. The family’s special relationship to Linfield University spans several decades, with both Don and Cindy teaching at Linfield at different periods. The opening reception runs 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at Linfield Gallery; an artists’ talk will be held Sept. 17 (see details below). Both events and the gallery itself are free and open to the public. The exhibit runs Aug. 28-Oct. 5 in the Linfield Gallery, open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays. Sunday, Sept. 1: Sounds of Summer concert and music fundraiser
The Sounds of Summer Concert is a benefit concert for the Linfield Department of Music. The concert features rock violinist Aaron Meyer and Friends and is sponsored by Bernards CPA, Macy and Son, Dave Franey Electric LLC and Lum’s Auto Center. Seating is on the lawn, so remember to bring your chairs. Wine will be available for purchase, as well as food available for pre-order from The Wandering Vine. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome.

Saturday, Sept. 7: First home football game vs. Denison University
Linfield University’s No. 23-ranked Wildcats will kick off their 2024 football season at home against Denison University. This is the second time the teams have faced off to open the season; last year, the Wildcats traveled to Granville, Ohio, where they won 28-14 . This year’s roster is already drawing attention: KATU’s Tyree Smith previewed the season for the Xfinity Northwest Sports segment, and D3Football.com named three members to their preseason All-American team.

Saturday, Sept. 7: The 24 Hour Plays from Linfield Theatre
Student playwrights, actors, directors and designers will gather to receive a writing prompt that challenges the students to write, rehearse and perform new plays in a 24-hour period. By Saturday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m., the theatre doors will open to audiences to come see what the students have created. Sunday, Sept. 8: Acorn to Oak winery pop-up with Satyr Fire
Acorn to Oak Wine Experience, a student-run tasting room on McMinnville’s famed 3rd Street, hosts their Second Sunday pop-up with Satyr Fire. Winemaker Paul Johnson will share the unique stories behind the crystalline, invigorating whites of the small-batch label. The winery creates unique artwork for every bottle and write short fiction to accompany every new wine release. Some of the original art will be on display, and the stories will be available for guests read.

Thursday, Sept. 12: Reflections: María García in Concert
Pianist María García has gained recognition as a soloist, collaborative performer and teacher. Praised for her “dynamic, warmly expressive and exciting style” she was All Classical Radio’s 2022-2023 Artist in Residence and has recorded solo and chamber works for All Classical’s Recording Inclusivity Initiative. García began piano studies in her native Puerto Rico at the age of four making her debut with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra at ten. She holds a Bachelor’s of Music with Distinction in Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and a Master’s and Doctoral Studies (ABD) from SUNY Stony Brook. Locally she collaborates with 45th Parallel Universe, Third Angle, Oregon Symphony and Oregon Ballet Theatre, and was a founding member of the Award-winning 20 Digitus Duo.

Monday, Sept. 16: Latine Heritage Month kickoff party and Mercado
Each year, Linfield University observes Latine Heritage Month from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, including events, displays and celebrations on both campuses. For the first time, the kickoff celebration will be open to the public and feature a mercado (market) of art, design, clothing and more from Latine-owned businesses. It will be the first of many events during the month; details of other events, including the annual Celebración, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tuesday, Sept. 17: Artists’ talk for “Spheres of Influence”
An artists’ talk will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in Delkin Recital Hall (inside Vivian A. Bull Music Center) with light refreshments to follow in the Linfield Gallery.
