Campus and community participants will learn about and install Linfield’s first eco-roof from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5.
A presentation about green roof components and their benefits will take place in Renshaw Hall 104, and then participants will transition to the bike shelter between Terrell and Elkinton Residence Halls for the installation.
Students David Kellner-Rode ’11 and Sarah Valentine ’11, along with eco-roof specialist Dan Manning, of Portland-based Ecoroofs Everywhere, are leading the workshop and service project, and coordinating their efforts with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Linfield College is one of two private colleges in the Pacific Northwest to receive a Learn and Serve grant to help students and faculty implement sustainability initiatives, and this event is the first in a series of sustainability workshops.
The Northwest Sustainability Initiative, funded by Oregon and Washington Campus Compacts, supports service-learning in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines, and helps students take their educational experience into the community. Linfield students will assist community-based organizations dedicated to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
“Higher education plays a key role in addressing community and environmental challenges, and service is a significant component,” said Jessica Wade, Linfield’s director of community engagement and service.
“Our goal is to create more robust campus-community partnerships around sustainability,” Wade said.
Students have already developed creative ways to support the campus Climate Action Plan. They opened a campus bike shop to promote alternative transportation, developed a campus garden and implemented a community-wide energy drive, going door to door to swap out inefficient light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs.
Oregon Campus Compact is affiliated with a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents dedicated to promoting community service in higher education.
Linfield’s grant award will fund green energy initiatives.
