A Linfield College January Term class has students saying “Vivat Lingua Latina!” Or Long live Latin.
The class, taught by Peter Richardson, professor of German, was featured in a recent News-Register story by Starla Pointer ’82. Latin offers students “a better handle on the power of their own language,” Richardson said. “The stronger their English, the better off they’ll be in getting their ideas across.”
Students see the language as an invaluable asset to their other classes and their use of the English language as well. Though other languages are used for traveling, translating and business, Latin is focused on the thought process as students examine the parts of each word.
“I’m learning there are more words I don’t know than I thought,” said Caren Siegel, a senior majoring in creative writing. “And I’m learning more about the words I thought I knew. It’s fascinating.”
