Dr. Mark Blegen officially began his tenure on Tuesday as Linfield University’s 21st president, bringing decades of experience in academic leadership and a deep commitment to student success. Blegen most recently served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Carroll University in Wisconsin, where he oversaw new academic initiatives, expanded graduate offerings and led strategic enrollment efforts.
Named Linfield’s president in December following a national search, Blegen has spent the past six months preparing for the role. He visited the McMinnville and Portland campuses in February and May, meeting with faculty, staff, students and alumni to begin building relationships and gaining insight into Linfield’s culture.
“I am humbled and honored to step into the role of president at Linfield University,” Blegen said. “It is so readily apparent that Linfield is truly a vibrant and welcoming community, and I am excited to be a part of it.”
Blegen’s background includes faculty and leadership roles at several small liberal arts institutions, including the University of Mount Union, Springfield College, St. Catherine University and Carroll University. He holds a doctorate in exercise physiology from Kent State University, a master’s degree in exercise physiology from St. Cloud University and a Bachelor of Arts in sports science with a sports medicine focus from St. Olaf College.
Linfield board chair Lucinda Day Fournier ’95 said the trustees are confident in Blegen’s ability to lead through a challenging time in higher education. Blegen succeeds interim president Rebecca Johnson, who led the university following the departure of Miles K. Davis in 2023.
“The board of trustees and the Linfield community thank Dr. Johnson for her leadership over the last 18 months,” Day Fournier said. “We are confident that Dr. Blegen brings the experience, wisdom and determination to move Linfield forward and strengthen its place as a leading comprehensive liberal arts institution. We look forward to working with Dr. Blegen to finish balancing the budget, growing enrollment and ensuring a Linfield education for generations to come.”
Blegen has said his early priorities will include academic innovation, enrollment growth and strengthening connections across both campuses. But first, he says, comes listening.
“Linfield’s future is bright, and our greatest strength lies in our community,” he said. “I am eager to connect with everyone on our campuses, both in McMinnville and Portland, and to strengthen ties with the city of McMinnville, as well. Together, we will do wonderful things for current and future students.”
