Third Angle brings contemporary classical, new student compositions to Linfield Nov. 30 and Dec. 1

November 9, 2022 by Kelly Williams Brown

By Kelly Williams Brown

Four members of Third Angle play stringed instruments inside OMSI's planetarium with a glowing red sky above them.

Third Angle, a Portland-based group that plays contemporary classical music, will perform two concerts at Linfield University and provide masterclasses to students as part of the Lacroute Composer Readings and Chamber Music Mentorship program. The small chamber ensemble will play Wednesday, Nov. 30, then debut original student compositions on Thursday, Dec. 1.

Third Angle plays what they describe as “new music,” which is an extension of the classical music tradition that incorporates elements of jazz, rock, world music and more. The collective was founded in 1985 and offers a concert series, “Sound Walks”, original compositions, listening lab lectures and more.

“The students will be working with a small chamber ensemble and Hannah Penn, a mezzo-soprano vocalist,” said Jason Arnoldt, one of the event’s organizers. “Then, the next day, Third Angle will present six original works from both Linfield and high school students.”

Third Angle’s guest recital begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 in Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium inside Melrose Hall (location); the student works recital begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 in Delkin Recital Hall inside the Vivian A. Bull Music Center (location).

Both events are free and open to the public; visitors may park in any non-reserved spot on Linfield’s McMinnville campus. For more information about the upcoming concerts, call 503-883-2275 or visit linfield.edu/arts.
