Industry leader and educator will build on nationally recognized programs while expanding access to wine education
In 2020, Toni Ketrenos ’95 traded a successful career in the wine industry for the classroom at her alma mater. Beginning Aug. 17, the Linfield alumnus and assistant professor of practice will become director of Linfield University’s Center for Wine Education, leading the program into its next chapter.
Ketrenos brings a unique perspective to the role. As a Linfield graduate, wine industry executive and educator, she has experienced the industry from nearly every angle — from retail and distribution to higher education. Now, she will lead one of the nation’s most distinctive wine education programs while strengthening industry partnerships, expanding professional education and preparing students for careers in an evolving global wine industry.
“Teaching at Linfield has been my dream job,” Ketrenos said. “Now I have the opportunity to combine that with the leadership experience I’ve gained throughout my career. I’m excited to build on everything the center has accomplished and help even more people discover opportunities in the wine industry.”
Building on a strong foundation
Before entering higher education, she spent more than two decades in the wine industry, holding leadership positions with Winebow Imports and Winebow Distribution and as the corporate beer and wine buyer for New Seasons Market.
Since joining Linfield in 2020, Ketrenos has helped connect students with internships, developed industry-focused curriculum and incorporated Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) certification into student learning.
Rather than reinventing the center, Ketrenos said her focus is on building from its existing momentum.
“We’ve built an amazing foundation,” she said. “My experience throughout my career has been helping organizations grow. That’s where I think I can make the biggest impact — continuing to strengthen what already exists while expanding opportunities for more learners.”

Expanding opportunities for students and professionals
Among Ketrenos’ priorities is increasing awareness of Linfield’s undergraduate, graduate and professional certificate programs. She envisions expanding online and hybrid certificate offerings for working professionals, creating stackable credentials that support career advancement and strengthening connections between the center and Oregon’s wine industry.
In addition, Ketrenos plans to make wine education more accessible to broader audiences through its WSET certifications, on-campus lectures and other community-focused educational experiences.
“Wine touches so many disciplines — history, science, business, agriculture, culture and hospitality,” Ketrenos said. “Our programs help students see those connections while preparing them for meaningful careers. I also want the Center of Wine Education to be a place where members of the community can continue learning throughout their lives.”
Preparing students for a changing industry

Ketrenos believes Linfield’s interdisciplinary approach distinguishes the Center for Wine Education from other university programs.
The university offers the nation’s only interdisciplinary undergraduate wine studies program, pairing business, science and liberal arts with hands-on industry experiences. That approach, she said, prepares graduates for careers across every segment of the wine industry while giving professionals opportunities to deepen their expertise throughout their careers.
As director, Ketrenos plans to continue strengthening industry partnerships, enhancing experiential learning opportunities and ensuring students graduate ready to meet the evolving needs of one of Oregon’s signature industries.
“Toni is the right person to lead the Center for Wine Education and to expand the recognition and reach of Linfield’s innovative and unique wine studies program,” said Beth Concepción, provost/vice president for academic affairs at Linfield. “Her enthusiasm for the wine industry and Linfield, her care for students and their career trajectories, and her ability to forge key partnerships will be instrumental. I could not be more pleased to promote her into this role.”
