The stage is set for an exciting and swashbuckling return! Linfield University’s Theatre Program is producing Bryony Lavery’s adaptation of “Treasure Island,” running Nov. 11-20. The adventure sets sail with performances at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11-13, 18 and 19 with 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 20. “Treasure Island” marks Linfield’s return to Marshall Theatre with a live audience for the first time since 2019.
Tickets are on sale online at linfield.edu/arts and will be available at the Marshall Theatre Box Office beginning Nov. 5. Seating is reserved and tickets are $12 for the public, $10 for seniors (62+) and Linfield faculty and staff members (a limit of two tickets per ID), and $8 for students (any school, one ticket per ID).
“’Treasure Island’ offers audiences a rollicking fun escapade with its array of distinctive, yet recognizable characters,” said Janet Gupton, associate professor and director of the production. “Lavery’s adaption features a young woman in the role of Jim Hawkins as the desire for adventure lives in ‘each of us – girl or boy, grandma or granddad,’ who wants to board ships, fight pirates and find hidden treasure.”
Playgoers will be transported to the world of “Treasure Island,” featuring the Admiral Benbow Inn, the ship’s harbor, a 200-ton schooner named the Hispaniola and a murky oozing island with a maze of tunnels.
“Treasure Island is going to be an old-fashioned techno-fandango as seen through the eyes of a young adventurer,” said Derek Lane, visiting assistant professor of theatre and scenic designer. “Our team of faculty, staff and students are going all out to create a fantastic world for our audience to explore.”
Attendees should note that fog, haze, gun shots and strobe lights are used in this production. And, there is no shortage of stage blood in this show as pirates and protagonists fight with swords and knives and traverse an island full of surprises in hunt for the treasure.
Fans of the theatre can get a backstage preview of “Treasure Island” through the theatre program’s upcoming podcast, “Treasure Island: The Adventure Begins!” The episodes air at noon Friday, Nov. 5 and Friday, Nov. 12 and feature interviews with the director, cast and designers. “We decided to come back with ‘swords’ a blazing and reignite everyone’s passion for live theatre,” Gupton said. “We are going to launch our 102nd consecutive season with no island stone left unturned.”
COVID-19 protocols:
The health and safety of the audience members, students, faculty and staff is Linfield’s top priority. All Linfield University COVID-19 protocols and Oregon Health Authority recommendations will be followed. This includes:
- Face coverings are required, regardless of vaccination status.
- All audience members need to be fully vaccinated with an FDA- or WHO-authorized vaccine. Proof of vaccination along with valid photo identification must be shown at the time of entry.
- Audience members unable to be vaccinated are required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to the performance or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 24 hours prior to the performance.
- Individuals who are unable to or decline to provide the documentation required above will not be admitted.
- Children under age 12 will not be admitted.
