Linfield College freshmen Angela Leingang of Tacoma, Wash., and Garrett Lodge of Boise, Idaho, are the newest additions to Linfield’s prestigious Kemper scholar group. Kemper scholars are chosen from a select 16 liberal arts colleges around the country.
At Linfield, Leingang is a member of the Linfield softball team and Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. She is excited to work alongside other Kemper scholars to gain valuable leadership skills.
“My goal is to gain work experience that will prepare me for my future career along with strong relationships that will last a lifetime,” Leingang said.
Lodge, an international relations major and Spanish and economics minor, has been active at Linfield. He is a member of the Linfield baseball team, a student ambassador and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
“I hope to gain a valuable experience in leadership, business and working with others,” Lodge said. “I want to be a more objective leader and have the ability to work in good standing with people of other backgrounds.”
Kemper scholars receive annual scholarships based on need during their sophomore, junior and senior years. They also receive stipends to cover the costs of their work as interns in major nonprofit organizations in Chicago during the summer following their sophomore year. Scholars work in positions where they can learn about career development, financial management, organizational strategy, fundraising and nonprofit administration.
During the summer following their junior year, scholars work as summer interns in the insurance industry at offices of the Kemper Corporation throughout the United States. Additionally, Kemper scholars attend an annual national conference to discuss summer projects, meet with former Kemper scholars, and consider topics in administration, leadership and business. They periodically read and discuss major works on leadership, service, ethics or business; and they have frequent contact with Kemper Foundation staff to discuss the scholars’ academic and professional goals, as well as their hopes for future careers and learning opportunities.
