September 8, 2017 by Christian Feuerstein

By Christian Feuerstein

Idit ShnerSaxophonist Idit Shner and pianist Eun-Hye Grace Choi will present a recital of new works on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. in the Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian A. Bull Music Center at Linfield College.

Shner commissioned several new works for her tour throughout the Midwest and Oregon. One of these new works, “Saturation,” was composed by Andrea Reinkemeyer, assistant professor of music composition and theory at Linfield.

An active performer of both jazz and classical music, Shner has played in various distinguished venues in the United States and abroad. Her third CD, “Le Merle Noir” was released on Origin Classics in August 2013. Her previous classical recording, “FISSURES: 20th Century Music for Saxophone and Harp,” with renowned harpist Yumiko Schlaffer, was played on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” She has performed with the Oregon Symphony and Eugene Symphony and at the Northwest Percussion Festival, Electronic Music Midwest, among others. She is the associate professor of saxophone and jazz studies at the University of Oregon and was recently awarded the 2016 University of Oregon Faculty Excellence Award.

Choi began playing the piano at the age of six and has worked with many renowned artists. Choi has won several competitions and performed extensively as a collaborative pianist throughout the United States and abroad. Her performance at the Hot Springs Music Festival was broadcasted on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today.” She holds a degree in composition from Yonsei University in Korea, a master’s degree in collaborative piano from Florida State University and a doctorate’s degree from the University of Minnesota.

Reinkemeyer is a freelance composer, with recent commissions from the Lacroute Arts Series at Linfield, The Wild Swan Theater and many others. Before becoming a professor at Linfield, she served on the faculties of Mahidol University International College, Thailand, and Bowling Green State University, Ohio. She studied composition at the University of Michigan and the University of Oregon.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 503-883-2275 or visit www.linfield.edu/arts.
