The Oregon Department of Human Services invited Linfield nursing students to share the results of interviews with local immigrants.
As part of their nursing coursework at the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO), Linfield students talked with individuals from the Burmese, Iraqi, Somali and Slavic communities to learn about their health-related cultural beliefs, and compiled the information for state officials.
The student presentation, sponsored by Linfield College, IRCO and the Oregon Department of Human Services, was held in June. Linfield student advocates shared an interactive presentation that included open discussion and a Q&A session.
“This project gave us the chance to take an active role in advocating for an underserved and underrepresented population within our own community,” said nursing student Caitlin Deede (pictured), who organized the event along with fellow student Julie Sokalski.
