Kim Dupree Jones named new Dean of Nursing

Kim Dupree JonesKim Dupree Jones, professor of nursing and medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), will take the helm as dean of the Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing beginning in August.   

“I am thrilled that Kim Dupree Jones will lead our nursing program,” said Susan Agre-Kippenhan, vice president for academic affairs at Linfield College. “Her commitment to nursing education in a liberal arts setting, research expertise, experience as a family nurse practitioner and her focus on the future of nursing’s contribution to the changing healthcare environment proves that she’s a perfect fit for Linfield.”

Linfield “Best of the West,” says Wall Street Journal

In the recent Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings, Linfield was named the top college in the west in a rural or small-town setting. Linfield outranked colleges such as Washington State University, George Fox University, the University of Wyoming and the University of Idaho.   

 The publication ranked Linfield No. 166 nationally, out of more than 1,000 schools. Linfield was also ranked No. 66 for “Best Liberal Arts Colleges,” tied with Whitman College.

Linfield College choir to perform homecoming concert

Linfield College ChoirThe Linfield College Concert Choir will cap its 2018 tour of southern California with a homecoming concert.  

The Choir Tour Homecoming Concert will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield. The concert is free and open to the public.

Author John Daniel to read from ‘Gifted’

Author John DanielThree-time Oregon Book Award winning author John Daniel will read from his debut novel, “Gifted.” 

Daniel will read on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room of the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield.

‘Language, Memory and Story’ topic of Joe Wilkins’ faculty lecture

Professor Joe WilkinsJoe Wilkins, associate professor of English at Linfield College, will present “Language, Memory and Story: Writing Across the Genres” on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Fred Meyer Lounge in Riley Hall at Linfield.   

“We carry deep in our bones the impulse to fit language to the world,” said Wilkins. “Song and story were our first arts.”

  • Patrick Cottrell, associate professor of political science, was on Voice of America to talk about the Olympic Winter Games and how they can provide a “political opportunity” for countries to make statements or achieve goals.  
  • Jeremy Weiz, associate professor of biology, spoke to the blog Greatist to debunk the current ‘raw water’ trend. It was reprinted on AOL. 
  • Kyle Putnam, assistant professor of business, spoke to the News-Register about teaching cryptocurrency and blockchain.   
  • Jennifer Williams, assistant professor of religious studies, and her students were featured in a story about a Portland imam opening his mosque.
