Day of service honors Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 16, 2017 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Martlin Luther King Day, Jr. Linfield College students and staff served the local community during the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Saturday, Jan. 14.

Volunteers worked with two McMinnville community partners, Gallery Theater and Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP), as well as made tie blankets to donate to the Union Gospel Rescue Mission. Prior to beginning the service projects, members of Linfield’s Black Student Union led volunteers in reflections about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Chaplain David Massey discussed Martin Luther King, Jr.’s spiritual values.

“I believe that days of service benefit Linfield students greatly,” said Erika Phillipo, community engagement and service programming assistant. “Not only does it allow them to give back to the greater community, but it also lets them learn and be aware of different social issues affecting our community as well as different resources available.”

Linfield’s day of service honors Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of peaceful community action. Events are focused on increasing understanding and creating a more inclusive and celebratory community.

This event was sponsored by Linfield Community Engagement and Services, Multicultural Programming and Black Student Union. Learn more about Linfield service.
