Textbooks included in tuition with new First Day Complete program

A student reads a book at the end of a library shelf.Starting with the 2023-24 academic year, Linfield University is rolling out a convenient and equitable way for students to get textbooks.

In partnership with Barnes & Noble, the First Day Complete textbook rental program will bundle all of a student’s required print and online course material for the semester ahead. Students can pick up all the materials in person or have them shipped for a small fee. Textbook costs will be included in tuition, which ensures that price isn’t a barrier for low-income students and that all students will have the materials they need for the first day of class.

“This takes the guess-work out of budgeting for textbooks and eliminates a major chore for students at the beginning of the semester,” said Michael Wenz, Linfield’s chief financial officer and vice president for finance and administration. “More importantly, it ensures that all students are ready for classes on the first day and no one is disadvantaged because they can’t afford their textbooks.”

At the end of the semester, students return their books, except for nursing textbooks, which are kept to better prepare for licensing exams. First Day Complete does not include items like notebooks, lab kits, tools such as calculators, and some academic journals.
