German sonnets come alive for language students

Professors Gudrun Hommel-Ingram and Katherine Kernberger and their students hosted a visit from composer Libby Larsen, whose world premiere of her “Moabit Sonnets” was performed at Linfield last weekend.Larsen’s composition is adapted from poems written from prison by Albrecht Haushofer, a German Resistance activist during World War II.

Hommel-Ingram’s German language students read some of Haushofer’s sonnets and came up with a variety of translations prior to Larsen’s visit. They listened as the composer talked about her discovery of Haushofer and his poems, how one sets language to music, the musicality of language, and politics and poetry.

Students also heard from English Professor Kernberger, who talked about the sonnet form, along with an interpretation of one of Haushofer’s poems.

The session was attended by students from German, French and Chinese classes.
