National honor confirms what Linfield students already know: opportunity lives here
Linfield University has been named an “Opportunity College and University” in the newly released Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, putting a national spotlight on Linfield’s long-standing commitment to access, affordability and social mobility.
The updated classification, developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education, recognizes just 16% of colleges and universities nationwide for delivering real results for students from lower-income backgrounds. Linfield is one of the few private universities in the Pacific Northwest — and the only Oregon university of its kind — to earn the “higher access, higher earnings” distinction.
“This classification recognizes what Linfield has always done for students,” Interim President Becky Johnson said. “We open doors to students with potential, challenge and support them, and set them up for success. Our many successful alumni are proof of this. We’re proud that the Carnegie Foundation has affirmed it.”
Access and affordability: More than a mission statement
The new “Opportunity Classification” was created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education as part of a reimagined approach to evaluating U.S. colleges. It highlights institutions that enroll and graduate significant numbers of students from historically underrepresented groups, including first-generation and low-income students — and that help them achieve real, measurable success after graduation.
At Linfield, those priorities are deeply embedded in the university’s identity. More than 40% of Linfield undergraduates are first-generation college students, and more than one-third of undergraduates receive federal Pell Grants. The university offers robust financial aid and scholarship programs. In fact, 95% of all Linfield undergraduate students receive financial assistance.
Social mobility isn’t just a buzzword here
Linfield isn’t just about getting students across the graduation stage — it’s about setting them up for what comes next. The university consistently ranks among the top schools in the region for social mobility, according to U.S. News & World Report. The university also earned recognition as the No. 1 private university in Oregon for social mobility by Washington Monthly.
“Social mobility” refers to a college’s ability to help students from lower-income backgrounds earn degrees and achieve strong outcomes — like higher graduation rates, affordable tuition and post-college earnings — compared to similar schools. Rankings consider both how many Pell Grant recipients a college serves and how well those students succeed.
“Our students work hard, and we match their energy with mentorship, opportunity and support,” said Gerardo Ochoa, vice president for enrollment management and student success. “This Carnegie recognition proves what we already know: Linfield helps students succeed in this world — and fast.”
