Washington Monthly rates Linfield as a top college for “best bang for the buck”

Pioneer Hall at Linfield CollegeWashington Monthly has named Linfield College as one of the top liberal arts colleges where you get the “Best Bang for the Buck.”

The “Best Bang for the Buck-Liberal Arts Colleges” ranking is a list of colleges that do the best job of helping non-wealthy students earn degrees at affordable prices. Out of 1,572 colleges and universities in the publications’ broader rankings, only 349 made the cut as best-bang-for-the-buck schools.

To be considered, colleges have to meet four criteria: at least 20 percent of their students must receive Pell Grants; the schools must have a graduation rate of at least 50 percent; the actual graduation rate must meet or exceed the rate that would be statistically predicted for that school given the number of lower-income students admitted; and the schools must have a student loan default rate of 10 percent or less.

Linfield was 51 on the list, with 27 percent of students receiving Pell Grants; a 73 percent graduation rate; and a 2 percent default rate on student loans.

Linfield was recently named one of 125 colleges chosen for the “Best in the West” section of the Princeton Review’s “2014 Best Colleges: Region by Region.”
