The Gould Piano Trio and clarinetist Robert Plane will perform Friday, April 29, at 8 p.m. at Linfield College. The concert is sponsored by the Linfield Chamber Orchestra as part of the 20th Anniversary Season.
The enthusiasm of the Gould Piano Trio is infectious, said Gramophone magazine. The New Zealand Herald wrote, “Gould’s violin can soar like a lark, with a sweetness of tone that is honey to the ear; Neary’s spruce, articulated cello lines bring the bounce and propulsion of a jazz group.”
Plane has been praised for his lyrical quality. “Plane’s clarinet has an eloquent and expressive voice,” said The Times of Great Britain. “He can produce whispered tone from nothing, bite the air with a chisel edge, roar low down like a didgeridoo or soar with the pure white sound of a cathedral treble.”
The program will include Johannes Brahms’ melodic “Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Cello in A minor, Op. 114,” Béla Bartók’s fiery piece, “Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet and Piano, Sz. 111,” and Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time.”
Music critic Alex Ross of The New Yorker called Messiaen’s composition “the most ethereally beautiful music of the twentieth century.” It was first heard on a brutally cold January night in 1941, at a German prisoner-of-war camp. Messiaen wrote most of it after being captured as a French soldier during the German invasion of 1940. The première, performed for shivering prisoners and German officers, took place in an unheated barrack.
The concert will be in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall on the Linfield College campus, at 900 SE Baker Street in McMinnville. Single reserved tickets are $25.
