Linfield College is a top producer of Fulbright scholars
Linfield College is among the top American colleges and universities that produced the most 2017-2018 Fulbright U.S. students, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced.
Four graduates from Linfield received Fulbright awards for the academic year 2017-2018. Linfield is tied with Lewis & Clark College and Reed College for the highest amount of Fulbright awardees among private liberal arts colleges in Oregon. However, Linfield had a higher acceptance rate than its fellow Oregon colleges. Lewis & Clark and Reed had more applicants for the four awards than Linfield did—18 and 13 applicants, respectively. Linfield had 11, a 36 percent acceptance rate.
Author John Daniel to read from ‘Gifted’
Three-time Oregon Book Award-winning author John Daniel will read from his debut novel, “Gifted.”
Daniel will read on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room of the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield.
Keyboard Kapers at Linfield College to feature Jeffrey LaDeur
Linfield College’s Keyboard Kapers, a celebration of all things piano, will highlight renowned visiting pianist Jeffrey LaDeur.
Keyboard Kapers encompasses three events from Feb. 28-March 3, including a guest lecture, a concert and a master class. LaDeur will present “Musicien Français,” a discussion of French music from 1700-1918, on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 1:30 p.m. “Piano Potpourri,” a concert featuring LaDeur, Linfield piano Professor Johnandrew Slominski and Linfield students, will be held Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. A master class featuring young artists will be held Saturday, March 3, at 10:30 a.m. All events will be held in the Vivian A. Bull Music Center at Linfield College.
Acclaimed author and translator Achy Obejas to speak at Linfield
Achy Obejas, an acclaimed author and noted translator, will speak at Linfield College as part of her residency as the 2018 Woodrow Wilson fellow.
Obejas will read from her work on Thursday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield. This talk is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/LinfieldLive. After the reading, there will be a reception and book signing in Jonasson Hall, lower level of Melrose Hall. Obejas will also visit classes beginning Monday, Feb. 26, as part of her residency.
Linfield examines Oregon’s WWII internment of Japanese Americans
Throughout March, Linfield College will discuss the incarceration of Japanese Americans throughout Oregon during World War II. The college will examine the weight of these actions through a traveling exhibit, an art installation and a documentary film.
On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the forced relocation of Japanese Americans in the wake of the attack at Pearl Harbor. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese Americans on the West Coast were forcibly relocated to internment camps. Permanent camps were built in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming, and temporary camps were established in Oregon. Even Linfield students were forced to relocate, leaving their lives behind.

‘Futility of Preparedness’ exhibit and performance at Linfield Gallery
Linfield Gallery is pleased to present “Futility of Preparedness,” an exhibition and performance featuring Portland-based artist group Physical Education. The exhibit, which opened Feb. 14, will continue to change and evolve as both a site-specific installation and as a staging ground for an original performance. An opening reception and performance with the artists will be held Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the gallery. A Movement Workshop with Physical Education will be held Wednesday, March 14, at 6 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center. Both events are free and open to the public.
Student presents on studying abroad in Ireland
Rebecca Kimball ’18 will speak about her experiences studying abroad in Ireland on Thursday, March 15, at 4 p.m. in 201 Riley.

- José Angel Araguz will present a workshop, “Creating the Moon: Poetic Authority and Hybrid Forms,” at the Terroir Creative Writing Festival.
- Linfield College President Thomas Hellie was honored for his commitment to advancing Oregon’s wine community during the Oregon Wine Symposium Awards luncheon last week.
- Jennifer Ruh Linder, professor of psychology, was notified that her article, “Pretty as a Princess: Longitudinal Effects of Engagement with Disney Princesses on Gender Stereotypes, Body Esteem, and Prosocial Behavior in Children,” was one of the top downloaded articles in the journal “Child Development” recent publication history. Four Linfield students were trained and collected all of the preschooler interview data in Oregon that was reported on this paper: Helena Frueh, Cynthia Morales, Jessica Lucas and Emily Anderson.
